Farlow Samuel Private 80 29th Btn Australian Infantry. Samuel was born 29th June 1875 at 4 St. Matthews Street off Willenhall Rd. Wolverhampton. He emigrated to Australia in 1913 following his older sisters Elizabeth Maloney and Sarah Jane. At the age of 40 he enlisted into the Australian army at Kingslake, Victoria recording that he had three years previous service with the 3rd Btn South Staffordshire Regiment. Joined 8th July 1915 29th Battalion HQ Details Pioneer Section, aged 40yrs, 5ft 9in, 10st 3lbs. Occupation was Stableman. November 1915 embarked Melbourne, Dec 1915 landed Egypt; June 1916 Alexandria, Egypt to Marseilles, France. Initially reported as ‘wounded’, and then recorded as ‘wounded and missing’ after 19th July. In March 1917 received his dog tag from Germany, just saying deceased. His records state “Buried in vicinity of Fleurbaix – Sheet 36” His sister Elizabeth received his personal effects: one safety razor and blades! Elizabeth received his medals and plaque in the early 1920s. (Pension & estate?) Letter dated 1922 from Australia House in London to Base in Australia saying that after exhaustive searches still not able to locate his grave. His name was recorded on V.C. Corner Australian Cemetery Memorial at Fromelles. That was the last heard of Samuel Farlow until 2009 when his body was found along with many others. Samuel was Killed in Action 19 July 1916. and is now buried in Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery, France.
