Victoria Cross, Citation: An extract from the London Gazette, dated 4th August 1916, records the following:- "For most conspicuous devotion to duty. Although himself wounded, he went to the assistance of an officer who had been wounded and was hung up on the enemy's wire entanglements, and succeeded in dragging him to a shell hole, where he dressed his wounds, notwithstanding that bombs and rifle grenades were thrown at him the whole time. Captain Green then endeavoured to bring the wounded officer into safe cover, and had nearly succeeded in doing so when he himself was killed."

1st/3rd (N. Midland) Field Amb Royal Army Medical Corps
Son of Lewis and Sarah Jane Burrows, Felix came from Penkridge and was born in 1897. He had been employed as a baker at Ives Bakery in the town when he enlisted in the Penkridge detachment of the 3rd North Midland Field Ambulance shortly after the outbreak of the war. He arrived in France with 1/3rd North Midland Field Ambulance in March 1915. Felix was serving with “C” Section at Gorre on 4 May 1918 when their Aid Post came under bombardment from German Mustard Gas shells. About 70 men were evacuated with gas poisoning down the casualty clearing chain. Eventually, Private Burrows reached a hospital at Etaples, but the effects of the gas and his other injuries proved too much for him to recover from. Felix died on 14 May 1918 aged 21. He is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery: Plot LXV, Row B, Grave 31. His widowed mother, who lived in Market Street Penkridge, received the news of the death of her son a few days later.
